Edward
Herbert Hayward 1871-1968 The High Street, Ongar family were reasonably prosperous, as well as shop staff there were two servants employed in 1871 and a governess in 1881. Robert's first wife Marian seems to have died young, not appearing on the 1871 census. His own father was a also a grocer. Edward visited New Zealand in the mid 1890's with his father's younger brother, landowner Brainerd Hayward (1841-1912). He met the lovely Charlotte Bint, fell in love, sailed to England, where they married in 1896, but then decided to return and settle in New Zealand.
